Every arcade game was designed around a specific stick — 4-way for Pac-Man, 8-way for Street Fighter, rotary for Ikari Warriors. Play them on the wrong stick and the game fights you. This guide explains the differences that actually matter and which joystick fits your build.

The three things that define a joystick

  • Gate (restrictor) — the plastic guide that decides which directions register. 4-way gates stop diagonal misreads in maze games; 8-way gates are for fighters and run-and-guns.
